St. Vito Vecchio Crypt’s astonishing frescoes date at the end of the 13th century and used to decorate the walls of the homonymous church located in the city district Fornaci. The original site was abandoned and used as a rainwater well. In 1956 the Italian Government bought the frescoes and got them removed in order to save them from humidity and degradation. The conservative restoration was performed by Bari Superintendency, in cooperation with Rome Central Institute for Restoration. Currently, they are located in the Ettore Pomarici Santomasi Palace, where the map of the original crypt has been reconstructed entirely. The focal point of the crypt is the apse with the fresco of the Christ Pantocrator benedictory with a hand (as in the Greek school), holding a holy text in the other hand, in which a passage of the Gospel is written. On the lateral walls there are many Saints side by side with in the traditional front position and byzantine hieratic eyes.
