Since the 1950s, the Sassi of Matera have become one of the world's most popular film sets for large-scale productions with biblical and historical themes. The rocky landscape, with its rock-hewn churches and alleys suspended in time, has provided the ideal setting for masterpieces such as The Passion of the Christ (2004, directed by Mel Gibson), Ben-Hur (2016, directed by Timur Bekmambetov), "Il Vangelo secondo Matteo" (1964, directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini), The Chosen (2019-ongoing, conceived and directed by Dallas Jenkins), King David (1985, directed by Bruce Beresford) and The Saints (2024, directed by Martin Scorsese). This two-hour tour combines the thousand-year history of the Sassi with the timeless fascination of cinema. The tour starts in Piazza Pascoli with a general introduction to the history, culture and architecture of Matera, and then ascends to the upper part of the old town to the Cathedral in Via Duomo.. From there it continues along Via Muro, where curiosities, anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories of the filming of the most famous films are recounted, with references also to the nearby Murgia, while remaining within the Sassi. The next stop is in Via Madonna delle Grazie, to admire the rock church of the same name, which houses a precious fresco of the Crucifixion, an authentic artistic jewel. The tour ends with a tasting of typical local products, allowing participants to discover not only history and cinema, but also the authentic flavours of Matera.
