Set out on our ‘Great Tour of the Sassi: Sasso Caveoso e Sasso Barisano’ that starts in Piazza Pascoli with an architectural and anthropological introduction of the history of the Sassi. The tour continues through the historical centre, down Domenico Ridola Street. Along the way you can admire two churches in Baroque style, the Church of Purgatory and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi. Following Via delle Beccherie Street you will reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the main square of the historical centre from which you will enjoy a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano area. The tour continues with the visit of an extraordinary hypogeum environment of Matera and, afterwards, with visiting of typically furnished cave-dwelling with household furniture and work tools used by farmers in the fields, located in the area of Sasso Baisano. Crossing the Barisano neighbourhood you will enter the Sasso Caveoso area where you will visit the so-called rupestrian church, completely carved into the rock and embellished with frescoes that date back to X-XIII century. At the end of the tour you will enjoy an exquisite tasting of traditional food products and wine in a local bistrot in the Sassi area. While in the evening, you will have an opportunity to relax at a wellness centre in the Sassi area.
