The Great Tour of the Sassi: Sasso Caveoso e Sasso Barisano starts in Piazza Pascoli with a historical/architectural and anthropological introduction of the Sassi with the background of the wonderful view on the Sasso Caveoso neighbourhood. The tour continues through the historic centre, down via Domenico Ridola. Along the way you can admire two churches in Baroque style: the Church of Purgatory and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi. Following via delle Beccherie you reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the main square of the historic centre. The tour continues with the visit of an extraordinary hypogeum environment of Matera and, afterwards, with visiting of typically furnished cave-dwelling with household furniture and work tools used by farmers in the fields, located in the area of Sasso Barisano. Crossing the Barisano neighbourhood you enter the Sasso Caveoso area dominated by the Monterrone cliff. On the top of the cliff, as indicated by a wrought iron cross, there are two ancient places of worship: the two churches of Madonna dell'Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone completely carved into the rock. The tour continues with the visit of a ‘rupestrian’ church. At the end of the tour, enjoy a light lunch with an exquisite tasting of local food products.
