Polignano a Mare is an iconic touristic city in the province of Bari, built at 24 m above the sea level, with a rocky coast carved by the waves of the Adriatic Sea. The old city, with its typical whitewashed houses, is characterized by narrow streets, balconies and terraces facing the sea, giving the visitors the feeling of walking in a little piece of art. The town was built during the Greek period, as testified by its same name, Polignano from “Polis” (City). The Cathedral of Assunta is one of the main beauties of this city. This is also the place where the famous singer Domenico Modugno was born, and that is why his statue stands on the seafront. For the lovers of cave diving, Polignano offers many natural sea caves, carved by the sea over the centuries.
