Our Barisano Vip Tour starts from Piazzetta Pascoli with the urban/archaeological and anthropological introduction to the history of Matera. Crossing the historic centre called 'Il Piano' you are going to reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto where the nineteenth-century “Ferdinandea” fountain stands. It was commissioned by the King of the Two Sicilies Ferdinando II, along with the beautiful balcony that overlooks the Sasso Barisano area and Civita Hill. The tour continues beneath the square, where the guide is going to illustrate the rock-hewn church of Santo Spirito, and then unfolds down the Sasso Barisano neighbourhood. Once reached the heart of the Sasso Barisano – used to be the bourgeois neighbourhood of the ancient city – the tour continues with the visit to the 'La Secretissima camera de lo core' - a site-specific installation that forms a kind of a labyrinth, where visitors will be able to explore a huge number of peculiar objects such as works of art and home-made objects of different nature that convey the true memories of Matera's inhabitants. The next leg of our tour is a typically furnished 'casa grotta' - literally a cave-house, proof of how the poor inhabitants of Matera had lived until the mid-fifties, before 1953 De Gasperi's Restoration act entered in force. At the end of the tour you are going to enjoy a tasting of traditional food products in a bistrot in the Sassi area.
