Ginosa is a little town in the Province of Taranto, 20km away from Matera. It belongs to the so-called Murgia area and is surrounded by ravines. Between the steep slopes, rock-hewn rural villages have been preserved since the Palaeolithic period as proof of being continuosly inhabited until nowadays. The evacuation of the ancient farmsteads only started in 1957, after a decree of condemnation. The beauty of this place, along with its similarities to Matera and its landscapes portrayed by several movies, makes Ginosa Matera’s twin sister. The guided tour includes a visit to the rural villages, the rural churches of St. Sofia and St. Barbara, Matrice church, a cave dwelling and a craft shop. The tour ends with a small tasting of traditional baked goods.
