Metaponto, part of Bernalda in the province of Matera, rises up over a plain between the Bradano and Basento rivers, named “Metapontino” after the town. In the past, it was one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia. The city was founded by the Greek settlers from Achaea in the second half of the 7th century BC, needed by the Greek motherland to prevent Taranto’s expansion. Pythagoras lived and worked in Metaponto until the end of his days in 490 BC. Furthermore, one of his schools was founded there. Today, the archaeological area of Metaponto is located near to the modern city, and it’s famous for its Palatine Tables and the National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto.
